Description
Objectives:
(1) Students will learn about biodiversity of ecosystems and individuals
(2) Students will understand why genetic diversity is essential to the health of a species
(3) Students will understand how certain traits that animals have help them survive in their habitat
Appropriate Ages: This activity is designed for 10 to14 yr olds but there is a modification for younger students aged 5 to 9.
Background information: Black-footed ferrets are North America’s only native ferret species. They once ranged across the western plains but were thought to be extinct until a small population was discovered in 1981. Thanks to breeding and reintroduction programs, black-footed ferrets have made an incredible recovery. This activity focuses on the factors that allow ferrets to survive in their habitat!
Provided materials:
ï‚· Copy of Environmental Situations cards
ï‚· Copy of Black-footed Ferret Bottleneck Scenario
ï‚· Multiple pom poms in a variety of colors
ï‚· Follow-up activity sheets
Recommended materials:
ï‚· Table for a workspace
